The Importance Of Beauty Sleep & Why You Aren't Getting Enough

s l e e p
/slēp/
noun.
synonyms: nap, doze, siesta, power nap, catnap, beauty sleep
A condition of body and mind such as that which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended.

Ah, sleep. One of those things that a lot of people take for granted. I know I did... up until I had a baby. The first two years of my daughter's life, sleep was something I never took for granted and I would always jump at the opportunity to take a snooze any time it came up. That said, you'll never know the value of sleep until it's taken away from you. It's something everybody needs; not only because it feels good or you have to, but also because it has a lot of benefits that affect our life and health. Simply put, sleep affects our quality of life.

Getting a good night's rest can benefit an individual in so many ways. One interesting fact I found is that it actually improves one's memory by strengthening it while unconscious. While asleep, the mind is very busy and aside from strengthening memories, it also works to reorganize and restructure them resulting in more creativity. Moving onto when awake, being well-rested works in our favour throughout the day as well. After having the recommended amount of sleep - 7 to 9 hours - we have more stamina and less daytime fatigue, it lowers stress levels, leads to healthy weight, and it can also help to decrease anxiety and increase emotional stability, which is very helpful for those suffering from depression. Studies also prove that students who get enough sleep have better grades, as their attention is sharper, than those who don't, and lack of sleep can lead to ADHD.

Despite all the benefits of a good night's sleep and the need for it, some people (including myself) may still not be able to achieve the recommended amount. Here are some common sleeping problems and quick ways to fix them:
  • Hunger | There are times when you're just laying in bed and suddenly feel the need to eat A quick fix is to spring for a light, carb-heavy snack to satisfy your late night craving.
  • Noise | When I lived in the busy city, it was always hard to sleep because of the constant cars passing and multiple sirens going off in the middle of the night. To fix this, try ear plugs or white noise to help cover up outside or indoor-related disturbances.
  • Not Tired | This is a problem I have every night. I always wait for sleep to come to me which is really annoying because I know it'll lead up to me waking up late in the day. One tip is to put away your phone and pick up a book to bring on the sleepies. I have no idea what it is, but reading always gets me sleepy, even if it's a really good book.
  • Discomfort | Investing in a well-designed mattress, breathable bedding, and proper sleepwear is recommended to overcome any discomfort. I don't know about y'all, but I always sleep best when I'm in baggy home clothes.
  • Sunday Night Insomnia | This was always something that I had back when I was in school and I would pay for it every Monday morning. To fix this, get up at the same time on the weekends as you do on the weekdays. Yes, this means giving up "sleeping in", but on the bright side, you get more free time to get whatever you want done!
  • Temperature | When I went to the Philippines earlier this year, sleep was nonexistent unless I had an air-condition in the room (yeah, I know. first world problems). It was just so hot and I found myself to sometimes have trouble breathing. It's suggested to keeping your thermostat set at 65ºF/18ºC so that you could sleep cool and stay chill.
  • Busy Mind | Lately for me, there's been a ton of things going on and when I'm trying to sleep at night, all of these things run through my mind and it's impossible to get to sleep. If you're like me, try to develop a pre-bedtime ritual to help you (and your mind) wind down.
  • Anxiety | Anxiety is not something that I suffer from, but I know there are a lot of people out there who do and that's totally okay. A tip for those who get anxious before bed is to try using a meditation app right before bed or stretching before you get under the covers. This will help calm you down and hopefully get you closer to having a peaceful, restful night.
