Fevers in Toddlers

Fevers can be a scary thing for new mothers, or even mothers in general. Up until now, Kayla hasn't gotten sick a whole lot. But when she does get a fever, honestly, I worry a bit too much. I'm always searching up remedies, what to do, and when to call the doctor. So to help any new mothers or long-time mothers, here's a few things that I found helpful to know.

  • There are four different ways to take a child's temperature: oral, rectal, axillary, ear (I use axillary - under arm)
  • If taking temperature under the arm, take off clothing to prevent it from making the area hot
  • A fever is anything above 37.5°c (99.5°F)
  • Avoid giving medication to children between 3 months to 4 years old, if temperature is under 37.9°C (100.2°F)
  • You may give child medication if fever is above 100.2°F, only if he/she is feeling achy or fussy. Otherwise, still avoid giving medication.
  • If you do decide to give medication, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is preferred over Ibuprofen (Advil) - Ibuprofen is more likely to cause side effects, especially in younger children
  • Do NOT use aspirin. It may cause Reye's Syndrome - a condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain. Aspirin is not recommend for people under 18 years old.
Other than medicine, here are some other ways to help bring down your child's fever:
  • Keep your child from being dehydrated. Fluids will help the body cool down. For example, water, juice, soup, and popsicles.
  • Running around may cause a rise in temperature. Your child can play but nothing to overexert their body.
  • Dress your child up in light clothing. This will allow their body heat to escape.
  • A cool, damp wash cloth on the forehead.
  • A warm bath will help cool your baby. But it's more effective after giving your child medicine.
In some cases, you're going to have to call your paediatrician. Here's a list of when to call:
  • Child is under 1 month old - fever is over 38.5°C (101.3°F)
  • Child is 1 to 3 months old - fever is over 38.5°C and has lasted more than 24 hours
  • Child is 3 months to 2 years old - fever is over 38.6°C (101.4°F) and rises or lasts more than 3 days. If fever is over 39°C (103°F), call doctor even if your child doesn't seem sick.
  • Child is over 2 years old - fever is over 38.6° and lasts more than 3 days.
If your child doesn't fall into any of the categories above, you will have to call your doctor if they have any of these symptoms:
  • Changes in behaviour or loss of appetite
  • Rashes
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth or lasting sore throat
  • Ear ache/pulling on ear
  • Stomach ache
  • High-pitched cries or whimpering
  • Swelling on soft spot of head
  • Sore or swollen joints
Call emergency if your child is experiencing these:
  • Unresponsive or limp
  • Having problems breathing
  • Vomitting and has a headache or stiff neck
  • Blue lips/skin or is pale
  • Seizures
Hopefully, these facts helped you or helps you in the future!

First Day of Spring '16

First day of Spring calls for walks around the neighbourhood with the family and the dog (who is not in the picture)

Finally, out with the cold and in with the warm. The sun beaming down on me is such a great feeling. The only thing that I hate about Spring is allergy season. But it's not that I have the allergies, Darwin does. And ugh, all that sniffling and nose blowing drives me crazy! Despite that, the best thing about spring: one more season closer to Summer. My favourite season.

What do you love (or hate) about Spring?

Unboxed | ColourPop Cosmetics

ColourPop just came out with their new Ultra Satin Lips. And for my love of lippies and the brand, I just had to pick up a few of them. Plus, I grabbed a few more of the their matte liquid lipsticks that I didn't have yet and two of their gel liners. Here's a mini haul of what I got.

Echo Park is a warm peachy nude.
TooLips is a deepened plum brown.
Mess Around is a mid-tone grey beige.
Opposed to their Ultra Matte Lips, these give a satin finish. These give a slight sheen to the lips. Since they aren't matte, they won't be drying compared to their matte liquid lipsticks.

Limbo is a deep chocolate brown.
Lumiere 2 is a dusty mauve pink.
Kae is a deep warm yellow brown.
Rooch is a deepened russet wine.
Chi is a cool tone nude beige.
I had to get Limbo because I heard it was a dupe for Kylie Jenner's True Brown K (still haven't gotten my hands on any of her lip kits, though I plan to). I also decided to get Kae, Rooch, and Chi because it was a collab with Karrueche, and who doesn't like Karrueche?

The last two items I got are from their Creme Gel Liner collection.
Get Paid is a metallic rose gold.
Exit is a bright white.

It'll be my first time trying out their liners and, of course, their satin liquid lipsticks. I'm excited to try them out and I will be letting you guys now what I think about them in a future post!

Travel | Summer Vacation 2015

Since the Canadian Dollar isn't doing so good, my family and I might not be able to travel to the US like we usually do every summer. Very unfortunate, but I'm still thankful for all the years we did have the chance to go.

Last year, we went on a road trip to Daytona Beach, Florida. There were a lot of photos taken so it was hard to choose which ones to put on here. But here are a few that I thought was worthy enough to share with you all:

Review | Biore Baking Soda

I was sent two of Bioré's new Baking Soda cleansers*. One of them is an everyday cleanser while the other one is an exfoliator that should be used only a few times per week. Their website claims that they dissolve oil and dirt while gently exfoliating your dry skin. They also claim that it cleans and tightens your pores all the while leaving your skin smooth and looking healthy. After trying these out for a few weeks, this is how my experience went:

The Beauty Rundown | February 2016

Here's my first impressions & reviews for last month's list:

Becca Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation:
First Impression | This foundation gives me a light to medium coverage with a slight glow to my skin. I wore it for 13 hours (9am-10pm). I didn't set it with powder (only set under eyes, forehead, chin) and only started to get oily until around 7pm. As for packaging, cute but could get messy like the Cover FX Custom Drops. Did not notice if there was a smell or not.
Review | Good foundation. I feel like this one is better applied with a brush. With a beauty blender, it gives a light coverage. With the brush, I'd say I got a medium coverage. It doesn't make me look overly dewy to the point that I look oily. It gives a nice glow to the skin. I recommend this foundation to people with normal to dry skin types.

Nivea Men's After Shave Balm:
First Impression | Really strong scent for men (but I don't mind). Very runny, but after rubbing into the skin got tacky. It allowed my foundation to go on smoothly and kept it on for the whole time. You get 3.3fl. Oz. for around $10. Compared to other primers that only have 1fl. Oz.
Review | It fills my pores and does keep my makeup on for a long time. I did tend to get oily nearing the end of the day (though, it does not claim to keep you matte, it's not even meant to be a makeup primer lol). Not anything excessive that blotting or powder touch-ups can't fix. All in all, good primer and good price.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector:
First Impression | I applied it directly onto my face with it's applicator. It left a streak on my cheek (fixed it by applying a crapload of powder highlighter on top). On the other side of my face, I put the product on my beauty blender then dabbed it onto my face. Worked so much better and gave a nice glow. Still applied powder highlighter on top and it looked amazing.
Review | Really good liquid highlighter. Just make sure not to apply it over a powder. It gives your skin a natural glow if applied alone. But if you want a really popping highlight, I applied Becca's Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed highlighter over it and it POPS.

And here are the new stuff I'll be trying out this month:
  • Makeup Geek Contour Powders | Makeupgeek, $10USD
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil | Sephora, $49
  • Biore Baking Soda | sent to me to try out

Raptors vs. Jazz

Last night, Dar & I got to watch the Toronto Raptors play against the Utah Jazz. We got there early (more than an hour) and this is what it looked like before it got full. We were seated right beside the DJ in the Drake Zone.
